Pokémon TCG Pocket, the mobile card game released on 30 October 2024, has had a very strong start. According to analyst Sam Oun, it may have generated around $4.7 million in its first two days.
What's official and what isn't
It's worth separating the figures:
- Analyst estimate: about $1.9 million on launch day, from around 1.2 million downloads, and about $4.7 million in the first 48 hours.
- Official figure from The Pokémon Company: 10 million downloads in the first 48 hours.
The Pokémon Company hasn't published any revenue figures.
The Pokémon GO precedent
The franchise's other big mobile hit, Pokémon GO, launched in 2016, passed $1 billion within a few months and $5 billion in 2021. Creature-collecting games tend to do very well commercially, and TCG Pocket looks set to follow suit.
How it plays
TCG Pocket brings the Pokémon trading card game to phones: you open packs, complete your collection and build decks to battle. Packs contain random cards, which is worth keeping in mind before making in-app purchases.
